Grass Maintenance
Have you found your self with a lawn that is patchy or a dust bowl. With a few easy steps and a bit of tender loving care, you will be the envy of the street with regular grass maintenance. Have you ever wondered how that guy up the street seems to always have a lush lawn? Here are a few tips that will help you on your way.
1. Water is the most important component, with out regular water you will never have your perfect grass maintenance program. I know that this can be hard sometimes with water restrictions or the water bill. But if you are not restrained from watering your lawn here are a few tips. Install a irrigation system that has a timer connected, this will improve efficiency and help remove the task. If this is not possible a soaker hose is the next best thing. When it is extremely hot and dry, an ideal circumstance would be to water your lawn every second or third day for about an hour, depending on what system you install. . Remember to water deeply to encourage deep root growth, as shallow watering encourages shallow root growth.
2. Fertilising your lawn is also a must with your grass maintenance program, you need to feed your lawn so that it can grow a deep root system and have the best chance to achieve the thick green grass carpet that we are all after. Fertilising your lawn will give the grass essential nutrients. A soil test will give a more accurate indication of what is missing in the soil. But if you regularly fertilise your lawn every 8-12 weeks, with a good poly coated slow release fertiliser it will grow healthy and strong.
3. Aerating your lawn is great for your grass maintenance program. Lawn Aeration also known as core aeration, essentially pulls out cores or puts holes in your lawn allowing the water to penetrate deeper into the soils providing the plant with the nutrients, water and oxygen that it needs. The pitch fork in the rain trick can provide benefits, however our machinery is designed to remove the manual task.
4. Weed Control is a must for you grass maintenance program, it not only looks ugly to have all the unsightly weeds that always seem to grow quicker than the grass. But it also eliminates the competition for the water and soil nutrients. Firstly remove the weeds with selective herbicides, and then control them with pre emergent herbicides that act in the soil to stop seed growth.
5. Top Dressing plays an important role in lawn health. Uually at the beginning of Spring and when the grass has come out of its Winter dormancy and actively growing you can top dress your lawn. Many popular choices include medium to coarse washed river sand, double washed pit sand, and sandy loam which usually consists of about 75% sand and 25% screened organics but can bring weeds in. The purpose of top dressing is mainly to correct levels, and settling of the lawn, but can also be a way of adding nutrition to lacking soils. Our top dressing equipment also make this task much less daunting.
