Regular scheduled feeding of your asset is as vital as feeding your pet if your aim is to have thriving ovals/lawns. A slow release fertiliser is preferred if it is not a grazing paddock. (See our horse arena info if you have a grazing situation).
Aeration and compaction
Lawn Maintenance in Queensland can be challenging with our tropical weather and long periods of dry spells. With torrential rain flooding our lawns and creating puddles that sit on our lawns for days sometimes.
Aeration helps by allowing the roots in the lawn to soak up the water and with an added bonus of dispersing the water below the root system as well.
Compaction of the lawn occurs with heavy animal traffic i.e. horse and cattle using the land or parking cars, boats, caravan or driving/walking in the same area time after time. When you have a compacted area it acts like a barrier for the water and reduces the rate in which the water can be absorbed by lawn.
Mowing
Cutting your lawn short may save you a few Saturdays of mowing but in the long run may end up costing you a lot more in fertiliser and aeration to bring it back. Some lawns, such as Sir Walter, don’t grow as well if cut too short. Leave it a little longer and mow it more regularly to train the grass correctly. It will be much hardier, less dependent and it will not be as prone to frost damage and scorching as a short lawn is. That may mean a little more work for you but in the long run it will save have you time and money.
After it has rained, leave the mowing until it has completely dried out as mowing the lawn especially with a ride on can cause compaction of the soil and leaves unsightly grooves in your lawn.
